The sea of life is tempestuous. The winds of adversity blow from every direction. For some, the storms seem never to abate.
We live in a world of uncertainty, of broken homes, of children gone missing. It's a world of rape and murder and abuse of every kind.
Terrible diseases plague us, and medicines don't seem to help. Hurricanes tear up the landscape for days, while powerful earthquakes destroy buildings and lives in seconds. Everyone wonders where the next one will strike.
We wish for peace on the world scene, yet can't even find it on the home front. People look for the solution to their problems in the lottery, in drugs, or through suicide. But there's no genie in a bottle to cater to your every desire, nor a magic carpet to whisk you to a never-never land of ease and prosperity.
There is a way, however, to chart your course though the storms of life. It's found in the pages of your bible.
It's not a Give -Your -Heart -To -The -Lord -And -Your -Money -To -The -Preacher solution. It's learning to trust the captain of your life, to develop a deep relationship with the one we call Jesus Christ, the God of the universe.
The process begins with prayer, not for God to take away your problems, but to guide you safely through them. It means letting go of your life, and committing it to the one who cares for you more than you even care for yourself.
Pray for God daily, asking him to forgive every sin you've ever committed, every wrong you've done to others. Ask him to cleanse you of every evil thought, of every speck of anger, and to give you a peace filled mind. And ask him for patience to wait for his response.
God knows what you need, and he'll give it to you when the time is right. Meanwhile, turn to the book of Psalms and read one each day. Most of them were written by Israel's King David, a man whose life was as stormy as yours. Many of the psalms are his prayers to God, asking for forgiveness and mercy; some are cries of despair; and others are hymns of praise.
As you pray, and study the Psalms, you'll find yourself developing a living relationship with God, and you'll soon sense him guiding your life.
There's an old hymn that begins, "Jesus, Savior, pilot me, over life's tempestuous sea," and ends with Jesus' comforting promise, "Fear not. I will pilot thee."
Jesus Christ has long been my pilot and guide in charting my course through life. The storms still buffet me, but knowing God is in control gives me a peace I could find nowhere else.

May God's blessings and peace be upon you.
